There are many things to see and do in the Grey District, and trying to fit everything in at times is difficult.

Whether traveling by shuttle, rental/private car or train here are some options for your trip to the Grey District
.

Travel Itineraries Options

 

  Train / Bus Combos to/from Christchurch

Option 1 - Christchurch to Greymouth
Visit the West Coast from Christchurch by TranzAlpine train and return with West Coast Shuttle, this option offers the best of scenery by including the rail journey and the Otira gorge / viaduct but takes the stress out travel. TranzAlpine railway from Christchurch to Greymouth. Stay at any of the great accommodation options. Travel with West Coast Shuttle back to Christchurch departing 8am.
Option 2 - Overnight from Greymouth to Christchurch
Travel with West Coast Shuttle departing Greymouth at 8am and arriving in Christchurch at 11.30am. There are many accommodation options available. This gives you the whole afternoon to check out the Garden City. Stay one or two nights depending upon your timetable Take the TranzAlpine back to Greymouth departing at 8.15am (shuttles can be organised from most accommodation houses to Addington train station) arriving into Greymouth at 12.45pm. This then allows you to continue to travel down the West coast if desired on the same day, with buses/shuttles departing fro the Glaciers to the south at 1.30pm or to the north Westport & on to Nelson at 1.30pm

  Overnight Travelling with TranzAlpine

Day 1

    Arrive 12.45pm and check into accommodation.

  • Option 1 – Tour to Punakaiki with Greymouth Taxi 2.00pm – 4.15pm Kea Tours 2.15pm – 6.00pm
  • Option 2 – Tour to Shantytown with Greymouth Taxi – 2.15pm 4.30pm
  • Option 3 – Tour Monteiths Brewery – 2.00pm – 3.30pm
  • Option 4 – 2 hour fishing trip either out on the ocean or up the river
  • Option 5 - Dolphin trip.

Day 2

    Enjoy a quiet day and have a look through History House Museum which houses a photographic history of our area and marvel at the number of ships lined up along the river bank. See some photos of our past floods and the devastation that was the aftermath of floods.

    Pop into Shades of Jade or The Jade Country and watch a carver at work. Walk through the Discovery Trail at Jade Country and see the different colours and interpretations of Jade from around the world.

    Drop in to Left Bank Art Gallery and check out the ‘Air New Zealand Pounamu/Jade Collection’ and see the current exhibition from local artists.

    Walk part of the ‘Flood Wall’ along the Grey River and stretch your legs before getting back on the train.

  Overnight Travelling with TranzAlpine plus 24 hour Car Rental

Day 1

    Arrive in Greymouth, pick up rental car and check into accommodation.

    Check the ‘tide time’ with your host and if it is right drive to Punakaiki. Walk the ‘Blowhole Track’ then drive 3 kms north to the Truman Track. This is a short walk through bush to the sea. (½ hour return) There is a chance to kayak on the Pororari River and to horse ride up the Punakaiki River and along the beach. Drive back to Greymouth, and if time permits, check out the ‘Discovery Trail’ at Jade Country and also ‘Shades of Jade’.

Day 2

    Check out of your accommodation and drive 11 kms south to Shantytown. (Opens at 8.30am) Allow about 2 hours and then head into town and after checking in for the train, take in the History House Museum. This is a pictorial history of our area and show photos of the amazing floods which have been flowing through the town since the start of our settlement on the banks of the mighty Grey River. Have lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the town before getting back on the TranzAlpine for the return journey to the east coast.

  Family with children –Self Drive

Day 1

    Check into accommodation and the let your adventure begin.

  • Option 1 – Shantytown.
  • Option 2 – On Yer Bike and the miniature villages of Waiuta and Reefton.
  • Option 3 – Have round of Mini Golf or try out the Driving Range.

Day 2
  • Option 1 – Raft the Arnold River
  • Option 2 – Walk the flood wall to the mouth of the Grey River, passing Coal Park and the fishing wharf and then do some gemstone hunting along the Blaketown beach before walking back into Greymouth. (You can also drive down to the tip)
  • Option 3 – Walk through ‘Shades of Jade’ and ‘Jade Country’ and watch the carvers in action. At ‘Jade Country’, check out the ‘Discovery Trail’.

  Family with teenagers – Self Drive

Day 1

    Check into your accommodation and after a good lunch try one of the following:

  • Option 1 – Black Water Rafting
  • Option 2 – White Water Rafting
  • Option 3 – 2 hour Bush & Bog at On Yer Bike
  • Option 4 – Enquire at the i-SITE and see if the Climbing Wall is open and spend a couple of hours challenging yourself.

Day 2
  • Option 1 - Drive 11 kms on the road south and visit Shantytown. Ride a steam train up the valley and try your luck panning for gold.
  • Option 2 – If you mastered to art of gold panning hire a gold pan for the day at the i-SITE and try your hand at one of the recreational panning areas around Greymouth.
  • Option 3 – Dolphin Watching.
  • Option 4 – Quick fishing trip on the river or ocean.
  • Option 5 - Visit History House Museum and see the pictorial history of our area.

  Greymouth on a budget

  • Option 1 – Drive north to Punakaiki and stop at one of the may picnic areas along the way and if the tide is right have a ramble along one of the beaches and check out the barnacles and starfish.
  • Option 2 – Check out the tide times and drive up to Punakaiki to see the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. Drive 3 kms north to Truman Track and do a bush walk which comes out on a plateau overlooking the Tasman Sea (½ hour return walk).
  • Option 3 - Walk through ‘Shades of Jade’ and ‘Jade Country’ and watch the carvers in action. At ‘Jade Country’, check out the ‘Discovery Trail’.
  • Option 4 – Visit the Left Bank Art Gallery and check out the ‘Air New Zealand Pounamu/Jade Collection’ and see the current exhibition from local artists.
  • Option 5 – Drive ½ hour east to the township of Moana on the shores of Lake Brunner. You may like to take a boat trip round the lake, throw your line in the water or do one of the many walks the area offers.
  • Option 6 – Enquire at the i-SITE and see if the Climbing Wall is open and spend a couple of hours challenging yourself.

  Greymouth as a base

  • Option 1 – Take a Scenic Flight – either local up over Punakaiki or Glaciers, Mt Cook or Milford Sound in a fixed wing plane or maybe you could do a helicopter flight to Punakaiki or the ‘Hidden Glacier’ at the back of Hokitika.
  • Option 2 – Half or full day White Water Rafting or a Heli Raft.
  • Option 3 - Drive south to Franz Josef and do a Scenic Flight with a landing on the glacier. Drive on to Fox Glacier and do a walk round Lake Matheson and drive back to Greymouth stopping off for dinner at Hokitika.
  • Option 4 – Drive north along the Coast Road to Punakaiki. After visiting the rocks walk the Truman Track. Drive on to the Seal Colony at Cape Foulwind. After lunch in Westport visit Coal Town then drive up SH6 in the Buller Gorge to Reefton and down the valley back to Greymouth.
  • Option 5 – Drive to the Brunner Mine Site via SH6 and the Taylorville Road. Cross the bridge to Stillwater and drive to Lake Brunner. Enjoy a leisurely walk round the lake or tackle Mt Te Kinga. There are boat trips available on the lake as well as fishing. The lake is also a very popular swimming spot in the summer. Follow the road east until you intersect with SH73 and turning right follow the signs through Kumara and back to Greymouth.

  Just taking it Easy

Day 1
Travel from Christchurch to Greymouth with West Coast Shuttle via the Arthur's Pass, departing Christchurch at 3.00pm arriving into Greymouth at 7.00pm. West Coast Shuttles drops off at accommodation options.
Day 2
Visit Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki with Kea Tours and Shantytown then staying. Day three Breakfast at your accommodation then be picked up at the door of your accommodation with West Coast Shuttle and take a relaxed journey over the Arthur's Pass to Christchurch.

  Wet and Wild

Day 1
Travel from Christchurch to Greymouth with West Coast Shuttle via the Arthur's Pass.
Day 2
Rafting experience with Wild West Adventures.
Day 3
Breakfast at your accommodation then be picked up at the door of your accommodation with West Coast Shuttle and take a relaxed journey over the Arthur's Pass to Christchurch.

Enjoy an Off Road and 4WD adventures suitable for all ages! With On Yer Bike

Afternoon
Enjoy some cultural & retail therapy and take in a tour of Monteiths Brewery

Day 3
Breakfast at your accommodation, then be picked up at the door of your accommodation with West Coast Shuttle and take a relaxed journey over the Arthur's Pass to Christchurch.

  For the Rail buffs

Option 1
From Greymouth
Visit Arthur's Pass for the day. Depart Greymouth at 08.00hrs, travel to Arthur's Pass, visit the Doc Centre, short walks to water falls, great dining, then catch West Coast Shuttle back to Greymouth at about 17.15 - 17.45hrs and back to Greymouth by about 19.00hrs.
Option 2
Travel by TranzAlpine to Greymouth Departing Greymouth at 13.45 and arrive at Arthur's Pass at 16.00hrs take a short walk or visit one of the many cafe's then catch West Coast Shuttle back to Greymouth at about 17.15 - 17.45hrs and back to Greymouth by about 19.00hrs.
Option 3
From Christchurch
Catch the TranzAlpine in the morning and get off at Lake Brunner - Moana. Enjoy a either a great three hour break before returning later in the afternoon or a full day taking in the some fishing, walking or the spots before returning back the following afternoon.
