Taramakau Roadrail Bridge
Roads to and within the region are fully sealed and easy to drive, while minor roads offer exploration opportunities to four-wheel drive enthusiasts. Four main road routes feed into the Grey District. State Highway 6 connects the Coast from Nelson, through Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika onto the Glaciers and through the Haast Pass to Otago. State Highway 7 through the Lewis Pass and State Highway 73 through the Arthur's Pass provide the east/west routes through the Southern Alps. By road it is just 3 hours to Christchurch Airport. Toll Holdings operate the Midland line with the world famous TranzAlpine Express and coal freight to Lyttleton (the main users). The Port of Greymouth is the focus of water transport with import/export freight and a commercial fishing fleet. Scheduled transport is available to and from Greymouth daily. There are week day flights between Greymouth-Westport-Wellington return with Air West Coast as well as charters into the Greymouth aerodrome. Air New Zealand has daily flights from Christchurch into Hokitika Airport and from Wellington into the Westport airport. Travel by shuttle or coach from Nelson, Picton, Westport, Queenstown, Glacier Country, Wanaka and Christchurch and many other areas.
