Arnold Power Station Walk
Access:
7km towards
Greymouth
from
Moana, starting at the Arnold Power Station.
Walking Time:
45 minute loop walk.
Features:
This forest walk passes through the Arnold River Scenic Reserve and offers views
of the Arnold River Power Station.
Lake Brunner Lakeside Walk
Access:
From Moana township, cross the Arnold River Swing Bridge and turn left to beach.
Walking Time:
20–60 minute return.
Features:
Spectacular views of the mountains and lake with mixed podocarp forest. Longer
walk is more challenging, when the lake is low as there is no formed track.
Rakaitane Track
Access:
Cross the Arnold River swing bridge and turn right onto track.
Walking Time:
45 minutes return.
Features:
Wonderful views of the Arnold River, podocarp forest, punga fern areas and regenerating
bush.
Velenski Walk
Access:
Located on the northern edge of
Lake
Brunner, behind Moana township. The track has two entrances –
from Taku Street in Moana township and 200 metres west of Moana Motor camp
on Ahau Street (no parking available at this end).
Walking Time:
20 minutes, one way.
Features:
Passing through a scenic reserve of mixed podocarp forest and offering lovely
views over Lake Brunner. You can either walk back to the start via the streets (10-15 minutes)
or return the way you came. If walking this track at night to see the glow worms, a torch is essential.
Bain Bay Track
Access:
From Moana the road to Mitchells, at the southern end of the lake. Opposite the
Lake Brunner Lodge turn right down a short road to the lake.
Walking Time:
2 hours return.
Features:
Across boardwalks and meandering through native bush. Magnificent views of the
lake. Old relics of timber mills a secluded camping and picnic area with toilets is located at
the Bain Bay.
Can also catch a water taxi from Moana.
Carew Falls Track
Access:
From Moana take the road to Mitchells at the southern end of the lake. Sign posted
approx 50 metres east of Lake Brunner Lodge.
Walking Time:
1 hour return
Features:
Climbing gently on a well-formed track you travel through mixed podocarp forest.
The track climbs more steeply as it leads you onto the rocks below the impressive Carew Falls.
Te Kinga
Access:
Iveagh Bay, Lake Brunner.
Walking Time:
3 hours (return) to lookout, 6-7 hours return to top of Mt Te Kinga.
Level:
Lookout moderate, to top fit and experienced.
Features:
A tramping track leads from the picnic area to lookout points overlooking Iveagh
Bay and surrounding landscape. From here there is a marked route that leads on up to the open tussock
tops of Mt Te Kinga.
